The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) has opened applications for 10 Country Researchers across Africa to lead the documentation and preservation of the continent's rich food heritage.
This initiative is implemented under the TAFS Project with funding from Sida and supports AFSA's #MyFoodIsAfrican campaign, which celebrates traditional food systems, cultural identity, and indigenous knowledge across Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Selected researchers will work directly with local communities to collect, validate, and document cultural food knowledge using the African Food Baskets KoboToolbox Toolkit.
- Document Food Heritage: Record traditional and modern dishes, beverages, recipes, menus, and preparation methods.
- Preserve Cultural Knowledge: Collect stories, proverbs, and traditional knowledge associated with food systems and sources.
- Fieldwork & Data Collection: Conduct field research, capture supporting photographs, and log entries into KoboToolbox.
- Community Validation: Engage local knowledge holders to review and validate collected data before submitting a final country data package and brief summary report.
