The Central Bank of Nigeria has assured citizens that the positive impacts of improving macroeconomic indicators will soon directly benefit everyday households and businesses as fiscal and monetary policies mature. Speaking at the 19th Annual Banking and Finance Conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in Abuja, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso represented by Deputy Governor Philip Ikeazor acknowledged public concerns that national economic gains have not yet translated into lower living costs. However, he emphasized that stronger coordination between monetary authorities and fiscal initiatives, such as the National Single Window, will soon bridge the gap between national balance sheets and household budgets, aided by the presidency allowing the apex bank to independently pursue its statutory mandate.
Echoing this perspective, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele, noted that while economic credibility is rising, macroeconomic stability must not be confused with prosperity. Defining stability as merely the foundation, the administration outlined that the next phase of reforms will focus on translating those gains into direct investment, production, job creation, and improved living standards. Financial leaders, including CIBN President Dr. Dele Alabi and Body of Bank CEOs Chairman Oliver Alawuba, highlighted promising milestones such as a 4.43% year-on-year GDP growth in Q2 2026, easing inflation, and boosted external reserves. They urged recapitalized commercial banks to actively channel affordable credit to agriculture, manufacturing, and small businesses to sustain momentum. Supporting this call, the World Bank noted that private-sector credit remains low at roughly 13% of GDP with small businesses receiving only 1% underscoring that generating quality jobs must serve as the ultimate benchmark for the ongoing economic strategy.
