Elumelu Urges 374 New UBA Inductees to Prioritize Customer Service as Core Differentiator

United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has inducted 374 young professionals into its workforce following the completion of Cohort 21 of its flagship Graduate Management Accelerator Programme (GMAP). The induction ceremony, held in Lagos, celebrated graduates recruited from eight African countries comprising 223 women and 151 men, with 345 based in Nigeria and 29 from subsidiaries across Guinea, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia, and Ivory Coast. The GMAP initiative serves as UBA’s core entry pathway, combining technical banking training in product design, trade finance, and customer experience with practical mentorship, having now equipped over 5,000 professionals since its inception.

Addressing the new inductees, Group Chairman Tony Elumelu underscored customer service as the ultimate differentiator in an increasingly automated financial sector, emphasizing that while banking technology and products can easily be replicated, exceptional service cannot be commoditized. He encouraged the cohort to guard their passion and build their careers on discipline, excellence, and hard work to ensure the bank's future stability. Reinforcing this message, Group Managing Director and CEO Oliver Alawuba described their graduation as a commissioning into active service rather than a conclusion. He urged the inductees to approach every assignment no matter how modest as a platform to showcase excellence, learn continuously, treat trust as their main asset, and embody the bank’s core values of Excellence, Enterprise, and Execution.
