The Federal Government has expanded its clean energy initiative, announcing plans to reach more than 10 million Nigerian homes by 2060 through the National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme. Implemented by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) alongside the Decade of Gas Initiative, the ambitious scheme officially launched its second phase in Akwa Ibom State following an earlier rollout in Bayelsa State. The programme targets one million households annually, aiming to reach five million homes by 2030 as part of a broader national strategy to raise domestic cooking gas consumption to five million metric tonnes per year.
To drive this transition, the government is distributing 27,000 filled LPG cylinders to local households across Akwa Ibom using a newly introduced Depot–Hub–Node cylinder exchange framework. This model positions refill access points within one to two kilometres of local communities, allowing families easy access to clean energy. Beneficiaries will also receive up to six free refills, monitored via a digital, barcode-enabled tracking system to oversee cylinder maintenance and track long-term household adoption.

Beyond its environmental goals, the initiative serves as a major driver for regional development and economic empowerment. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, noted that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to leverage national gas reserves to improve public health, support women, and stimulate local business. Complementing the gas initiative, the government introduced the Rural Women Empowerment Initiative for Entrepreneurship Development, disbursing ₦300 million in direct financial aid of ₦100,000 each to 3,000 women to boost rural enterprise and household security. Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno affirmed the state's commitment to building out supporting infrastructure, from cylinder manufacturing and storage to logistics and gas processing, as the Decade of Gas Initiative prepares to launch in its next state.
