Mastercard Foundation Associates Program 2026: 12-Month Paid Work Placement in 5 African Countries

Young graduates looking to gain practical workplace experience can apply for the Mastercard Foundation Associates Program, a 12-month professional development and placement opportunity currently advertised for applicants in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. Rather than being a conventional academic scholarship, this opportunity focuses on professional experience and workplace development. Participants, known as Associates, undertake placements where they apply their academic knowledge, develop practical skills, and build professional networks. Since its launch, more than 1,000 Associates across 22 countries have participated in the programme.

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Education: Be a recent graduate from a tertiary institution.
  • Experience: Have 0-2 years of work experience.
  • Interest: Be interested in gaining practical professional experience and available to participate in the full 12-month programme.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program alumni are encouraged to apply. The programme also places strong emphasis on inclusion, welcoming young women, persons with disabilities, refugees, and internally displaced persons.

Programme Benefits

  • 12-Month Work Experience: Placement in professional environments to build workplace competencies.
  • Professional Development: Support for leadership, employability, and entrepreneurship skills.
  • Mentorship and Networking: Opportunities to build professional networks and receive ongoing support.
  • Stipend: A stipend is provided for the duration of the placement.
  • Career Transition Support: Structured support helping Associates progress toward longer-term employment.

Employers hosting Associates are expected to provide meaningful assignments, supervision, mentorship, and professional development support.

How the Programme Works

Selected Associates are matched with participating employers or organisations based on available roles and their skills and career interests. Applicants should carefully review the specific vacancy and application instructions for their country of residence, since roles and requirements can vary by employer, location, and implementing partner.
