The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged parents to verify whether their children in tertiary institutions have applied for or received financial assistance from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Oyedele responded to an attendee who shared that his three university-aged children had not received funding and were unaware of peers who had. The minister suggested that some students might already be collecting the interest-free monthly stipends without informing their parents, jokingly adding that students could be receiving funds from the scheme while still requesting money from home.
Oyedele advised parents to demand proof of application directly from their children to ensure transparency. For those experiencing difficulties with the process, he encouraged parents to gather their children's details and complete the application on their behalf via the official portal, offering direct assistance at the Ministry of Finance if needed. Highlighting the benefits of NELFUND, he emphasized that the program provides up to ₦1.5 million per eligible student, covering institutional tuition alongside a monthly living allowance designed to ease inflationary pressures.

Addressing regional participation, Oyedele noted a significantly higher uptake in Northern Nigeria compared to the South, attributing the lower Southern enrollment to widespread skepticism toward government programs. He reassured the public of the scheme's reliability, citing testimonials and videos of students celebrating instant payment alerts, while urging parents and students nationwide to set aside doubts and take full advantage of the initiative.
