The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has challenged young tech innovators to develop simple, scalable, and affordable solutions designed to bring persons with disabilities and underserved communities into the digital economy. Speaking at the fourth NCC Hackathon Live Show in Abuja, themed "Technology Without Barriers", Executive Commissioner of Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, emphasized that innovation must address everyday realities rather than focus solely on complex design.
Participants at the event were tasked with creating offline-first, low-bandwidth tools that function seamlessly in remote, low-connectivity rural areas, with focus areas spanning AI speech-to-text, real-time sign language translation, image-to-voice navigation, accessible USSD tools, and inclusive job platforms. Several standout projects were showcased on the night. ADITUS offers accessible USSD and SMS emergency services via 112 for non-verbal users, while ClearSignal delivers tailored electricity outage alerts for visually and hearing-impaired users. SignBridge AI and E-Novate both presented real-time sign language translation tools built for healthcare environments, and Kasuwa introduced a voice-driven e-commerce solution designed for non-smartphones, requiring no screens or mobile data. Sora rounded out the showcase with an inclusive employment-matching portal built specifically for persons with disabilities.
Evaluation for the hackathon centered on local relevance, feasibility, affordability, and sustainability. Selected finalists will go on to pitch to a panel of judges for cash prizes, certificates, and opportunities for further development and deployment support.
