Nigeria Secures Global Market Reclassification as FTSE Russell Restores Frontier Status

Nigeria’s capital market is set to return to the global Frontier Market index on September 21, 2026, following an official reclassification by index provider FTSE Russell. This development comes nearly three years after Nigeria was removed from the index in September 2023 and relegated to "Unclassified" status due to foreign exchange liquidity shortages and foreign capital repatriation bottlenecks that restricted international investor access.

Announcing the milestone, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, attributed the upgrade to sustained recovery in FX availability, improved capital repatriation processes, and enhanced market accessibility. He noted that the decision serves as a key validation of the Federal Government's ongoing macroeconomic and structural reforms, signaling to international investors that Nigeria's financial market is increasingly open, orderly, and reliable.

The Ministry credited key regulatory and market institutions; including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Exchange Group, and Central Securities Clearing System for their joint efforts in modernizing market infrastructure and boosting investor confidence. Looking forward, Minister Oyedele emphasized that regaining Frontier Market status is merely a stepping stone rather than the ultimate destination, affirming that the government's medium-term ambition remains to deepen market liquidity, elevate transparency, and strengthen investor protections to eventually achieve full Emerging Market status.
