Nigeria Targets 8,000MW Power Supply by 2027 to Drive Economic Growth

Nigeria’s Federal Government has set a target to reach 8,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation and transmission by the end of 2027. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe disclosed this initiative in Abuja during the launch of the Renewable Energy Assets Management Company (RAMCO) by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The country currently struggles to wheel approximately 5,000MW, but the administration aims to scale up capacity to 6,500MW by the end of 2026 before hitting its final 8,000MW benchmark the following year.

To achieve this, the government is introducing RAMCO to establish a new paradigm for asset sustainability centered on professional stewardship, performance measurement, and operational discipline. While initially launching within the renewable energy sphere, RAMCO's framework will eventually expand to oversee the entire national grid. The broader strategy involves constructing a versatile power system that combines grid supply, embedded generation, energy storage, and distributed renewables tailored to regional economic demands, while deploying mini-grids directly to off-grid communities lacking traditional transmission infrastructure.

The Minister emphasized that the goal extends beyond ending blackouts to driving overall economic prosperity. Reliable power infrastructure is considered vital for bolstering domestic manufacturing and supporting high-demand digital infrastructure, such as regional data centers and artificial intelligence development. Ultimately, progress will be evaluated on transmission reliability and long-term sustainability rather than generation volume alone.
