The Nigeria Chapter of Women in Maritime Africa (WIMA Nigeria) has donated two fishing boats and fishing nets to residents of Tomoro Village, Araromi Onisiwo Island in Lagos State. Led by WIMA Nigeria President Mrs. Theodora Nwaeze, the outreach aims to provide practical support to women and youths whose livelihoods depend on local waterways, directly advancing inclusive participation in Nigeria’s Blue Economy. The initiative aligns with WIMA Nigeria’s strategic focus on empowerment, innovation, collaboration, and national visibility, translating high-level policy into tangible community benefits.
Keynote speaker Mrs. Jean Chiazor, SAN, emphasized that empowering coastal communities is a crucial investment in national economic development rather than simple charity. She called on stakeholders to expand support to cover essential areas like fish processing, storage, safety equipment, affordable finance, and local infrastructure. In response, Ben Mosan, President of the Modern Crayfish Fishermen Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited, commended the donation and highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration in skills development, business training, and health education. Moving forward, WIMA Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with local communities, government agencies, and private leaders to foster sustainable marine resource management and empower women across coastal regions.
